Coalition of Organizations in STEM Urges Enhanced Collaboration with the Ministry of Education to Elevate STEM Education in Ghana

A newly established alliance, the Coalition of Organizations in STEM (COS), has called for an enhanced partnership with the Ministry of Education to accelerate the growth and innovation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education across Ghana. The coalition, which includes a diverse group of private entities, non-governmental organizations, and passionate STEM advocates, is advocating for more robust collaboration between local stakeholders and government bodies to reimagine STEM education, ensuring that it meets the needs of the 21st century and serves Ghana’s future workforce.

While the COS acknowledges the government’s ongoing efforts to advance STEM education in the country, the coalition emphasizes that there is untapped potential within the educational system. This potential could greatly benefit Ghanaian students, strengthen the local STEM economy, and create opportunities for innovation.

“We are fully aligned with the Minister’s vision of ensuring that no Ghanaian child is left behind in STEM education, regardless of their background, gender, or financial means. However, innovation within the education system is paramount,” said a spokesperson for the coalition. “Education that is not continuously evolving and innovating can quickly become a liability to the economy. We believe that the future of Ghana must be driven by locally created STEM solutions that directly benefit our society.”

The Coalition of Organizations in STEM (COS) has collectively affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of students over the years through strategic partnerships and innovative STEM programs. These efforts, however, remain limited by the lack of integration with local experts and a system that can sustain these efforts across Ghana’s diverse regions. The coalition believes that without involving local STEM experts and advocates, the country will miss critical opportunities for growth, innovation, and job creation.

“We must bring local knowledge and expertise to the table,” the spokesperson continued. “By involving homegrown talent, we can transform how STEM education is delivered, creating a pipeline of skilled individuals who are equipped to address the challenges and opportunities of the local economy. This not only benefits students but also promotes job creation.”

To address the gap in STEM education, the coalition has unveiled a detailed plan that could revolutionize the educational landscape of Ghana. This plan aims to transform STEM education delivery from the primary level, driving systemic change that fosters practical, scalable solutions. The initiative has the potential to create over 1,000 new jobs for young Ghanaians in areas such as STEM design, tool manufacturing, training, mentorship, and related services.

“We are proposing an inclusive and practical educational framework that leverages local resources, expertise, and industry connections,” stated the COS spokesperson. “With the right partnerships, we can cultivate a robust STEM ecosystem that not only empowers the next generation of leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers but also contributes to the creation of jobs within the STEM sector.”

The COS urges the Minister of Education to collaborate with local organizations and experts to co-develop and implement these innovative initiatives. The coalition believes that by working together, Ghana can create an education system that equips students with the skills needed for the future while fostering innovation that will drive national development.

“We are excited to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and all stakeholders to co-create a thriving STEM ecosystem. By doing so, we can ensure that Ghana’s next generation is not only prepared for the jobs of tomorrow but is also contributing to the transformation of Ghana’s economy today,” the spokesperson concluded.

The Coalition of Organizations in STEM is calling on the Ministry of Education to take action now, guiding and supporting the growth of STEM education to meet global trends and improve educational outcomes for future generations.
